The Founder
The founder of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, Bishop Edir Macedo, 65, was born in Rio de Janeiro. In 1963, he began his career in civil service: he became firm in the State Lottery of Rio de Janeiro, Loterj, and worked at the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, IBGE, he was a researcher in the economic survey of 1970. He had completed 16-year career as a civil employee. But he stepped down to devote himself to God's work, which at the time was considered crazy by some people.

He is married for 36 years with Ester Bezerra, and had two daughters, Cristiane, and Viviane and the adopted son Moises. Edir Macedo always makes a way of talking about the support he gets from his wife. He says that women play an important role in the family. She educates the children to become men of faith, and cares for her husband, the house, etc. they live a busy daily life. However, the difference of the Godly woman is that she does everything with the Lord's direction.

He has an extensive academic background: a degree in Theology from the Faculty of Evangelical Theology “Seminário Unido”, and the School of Theological Education in the State of São Paulo (Fatebom). He has a doctorate in Theology and Christian Philosophy of Divinity; and in addition he has the Master of Theological Science degree in Federación Evangélica Española de Entidades Religiosas"F.E.E.D.E.R." (MADRID, SPAIN).

As evangelical writer, Edir Macedo stands with more than 10 million books sold, divided into 34 titles, with remarkable increases in the bestselling "Orixás, caboclos e guias" and "In the Footsteps of Jesus." Both hit the mark of more than three million copies sold in Brazil.

Today Edir Macedo is recognized as one of the most respected evangelical leaders in the world, he has already performed several evangelical events which gathered more than a million people. Among the various social works undertaken, the social work which stands out the most is the collection of 700 tons of nonperishable food to needy communities, in an event held at Anhangabaú Valley in São Paulo.
